MLH
Given the desired program on the ground floor, a configuration was sought in which, alongside the main building, the various secondary functions could be accommodated consecutively in the annex. This programming results in an L-shaped building. Urbanistically, the corner plot is not fully closed off; instead, the open corner of the volume creates a gesture toward the neighborhood. The home is organized so that service functions are located along the façades, acting as a buffer between public and private spaces. In these areas, the façade is perforated with narrow window openings, while where the façade faces the garden, the volume opens up with large glazed panels.
A traditional stacking of functions was avoided. The ‘mandatory’ pitched roof required by the zoning plan is circumvented by placing the bedrooms in the basement. To prevent these from being completely sunken, the ground floor is positioned approximately one meter above street level. Daylight patios ensure the basement bedrooms receive sufficient natural light and establish visual connections to the garden. The living spaces on the ground floor thus enjoy clear views of the garden.
The material palette is light in color (white to light grey) and consists of a sleek prefabricated concrete top and bottom, between which open and closed façade elements alternate. The solid sections share the same color but are distinguished by the texture of the surface.
