The Tivoli

Located on the Merwedekanaal in the Utrecht neighborhood of Rivierenwijk, we designed a contemporary houseboat. The houseboat opens up fully to the water while maintaining a more intimate connection with the green front garden on the shore. Its contemporary and calm appearance is achieved through a composition of large openings. A dark aluminum base, topped with vertical wooden slats and black window frames, gives the boat its robust character. Inside, the houseboat exudes a calm yet warm atmosphere, thanks to the open wooden ceiling combined with walls and floors in light tones.

The ground floor opens up to the water with large sliding windows and a terrace at water level. The different spaces and functions within the open floor plan are defined by the core and changes in floor height, naturally creating distinct areas within a flowing space. The desire to also have separate, enclosed areas is achieved through the introduction of a sliding partition, allowing the open space to be divided into smaller rooms and creating a living area with an intimate atmosphere. Next to the kitchen, a deep window seat is integrated into the façade, further strengthening the connection between inside and outside.

Inside, the houseboat has a calm yet warm atmosphere, thanks to the open wooden ceiling combined with walls and floors in light tones. Solar panels on the roof cover its own energy needs. The roof is finished with a white membrane, reducing heat gain. The ground floor is heated with underfloor heating, and several electric heaters have been installed downstairs.

The lower floor is bright thanks to the large window next to the staircase with a mezzanine, allowing daylight to reach deep into the house below water level. In addition to three bedrooms, the lower floor also accommodates two bathrooms, a technical room, and a large storage area. The desire to experience greenery in different spots within the interior is realized through the integration of a built-in planter in the mezzanine. Walls and floors in neutral tones create a comfortable and pleasant living environment.
