Nieuwe Defensie

In the Nieuwe Defensie project in our hometown of Utrecht, we are designing 145 homes for BPD. On this former defense site, a mix of single-family homes, apartments of various sizes, and two-story homes/maisonettes will be realized.

Nieuwe Defensie is part of the larger Merwedekanaalzone development: an inner-city, green, and car-reduced neighborhood with a total of 6,000 homes, schools, shops, restaurants, childcare, offices, sports facilities, and a supermarket.

Space is being created for a generous park along the water, where existing iconic buildings such as Villa Jongerius will occupy prominent positions. The design also includes green streets and courtyards, with cars largely absent from the surface.

From the outset, the green urban neighborhood has been designed with attention to flora and fauna. Not only people, but also hedgehogs, swallows, house sparrows, butterflies, bees, and bitterling fish will find a home here. Along the Merwedekanaal, a park and an ecological corridor will provide a water connection between the Merwedekanaal and Park Transwijk.
