Cooloft
We were commissioned by an investment banker and their partner to transform a shell walk-up apartment on the Coolhaven into a spacious loft. Inspired by one of our previous projects, their wish was to incorporate plenty of light, as few walls as possible, a double-height space, and a distinctive staircase. The floor plan has been kept as open as possible to allow views of the Coolhaven and the Rotterdam skyline from every corner.
The kitchen is positioned on the sunny side with direct access to the spacious roof terrace. On a summer day, the entire façade can be opened, turning the terrace into an extension of the apartment. Various openings have been created in the existing concrete floor to enhance interaction between the upper and lower levels. From the bathtub, you can look down into the dining kitchen while also enjoying views over Rotterdam. In the center of the apartment, a wooden core has been designed, integrating the stove, wardrobe, and kitchen appliances. The staircase is designed as a black eye-catcher, complementing the raw character of the concrete beams.
Throughout the entire apartment, great attention has been paid to the details. The saw cut through the concrete floor has been left exposed, door frames have been concealed, sliding doors slide into the walls, and installations are hidden from view. Everything is designed to enhance the sense of space.
