The existing building of primary school De Boemerang was from the 1980s and completely worn out. Renovation was not an option and it was decided to replace the new building. The location is in the heart of Ondiep, Utrecht. Ondiep is a working-class neighborhood that is very stony with little green. Part of the task was therefore to add green to the neighborhood and to make the square more liveable.
Ondiep has an orthogonal subdivision with mainly residential buildings. The location of the school is a head of such a residential block and in its front facade it also participates in the orthogonal design language and materials of the neighborhood (brick). Leaving the building slightly set back from the sidewalk creates space for a green forecourt. At the rear, away from the street is the square. Here, in contrast to the hard front, we opted for a soft design language with flowing shapes and a warm cladding in wood. This creates a nice square where the meandering facade automatically creates places on the squares that are subdivided for the different grades.
