The original 19th century house was expanded and renovated to a large extend in the 90s. The shop on the ground floor was considerably enlarged to the Kloosterhof. The outside terrace is located on the roof of this extension of the shop.
We have investigated layouts to see whether the existing second floor could be planned more effectively to accomodate larger bedrooms. Eventually it was decided to take the master bedroom to the first floor so the kids have their own area on the second floor. The master bedroom is now the third link in the series of expansions of the house. A contemporary abstract volume, connected with a transparent corridor to the back part of the original house, floating above the rear entrance of the store. Between the annex and the new extension a large patio provides daylight in all spaces and it also provides an elegant transition from the living- to the sleeping area and provides adequate privacy for the latter. We have chosen a dark zinc cladding that matches in color to the existing brick of the house. The extension is light in character due to the large cantilevering part of the volume, with respect to the rear side of the store.
